How much does vibe coding cost in 2026? Free vs paid, compared

What vibe coding really costs in 2026: the free tiers that work, what $20 a month buys in Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Copilot, Lovable, Bolt, v0 and Replit, and the hidden costs.

Short answer: you can start for $0, a serious setup costs about $20 to $30 a month, and heavy daily use runs $100 to $200. What changes the price most isn't the tool, it's how much you build: most tools count usage in credits or time windows, and a busy month uses more.

This guide compares the free and paid plans of the tools people vibe code with in October 2026, checked against each product's own pricing page on October 23. (I build Morphy, an app for running coding agents side by side; it's in the table too.)

Two kinds of tools

  • App builders (Lovable, Bolt, v0, Replit) run in your browser and host the app for you. You chat, they build, and it's online. They count usage in credits or tokens.
  • Coding agents (Claude Code, Codex, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Devin Desktop, Google Antigravity, Kiro) work on code on your computer, in any language. They come with an AI subscription and count usage in time windows or credits, and you host the app yourself.

If you're new to this, see Lovable vs Claude Code for how the two kinds differ.

Can you vibe code for free?

Yes, with limits. The most generous free options in October 2026:

  • An app builder's free plan: Lovable's 5 credits a day, Bolt's 1M tokens a month or v0's 7 messages a day are enough to build and publish a small app.
  • Codex in the ChatGPT desktop app, on ChatGPT's free plan, with the smaller GPT-6 Luna model.
  • GitHub Copilot Free in VS Code, and Google Antigravity's free tier.
  • Free models: OpenCode's free models need no account, OpenRouter has free models, and Ollama runs models on your own computer. In Morphy, all three are ordinary chats; see free and local models.

Free tiers run out quickly on real projects, so expect to pay once you build every day.

What $20 a month gets you

  • Claude Pro for Claude Code, the strongest agent on the independent Terminal-Bench 4.0 benchmark.
  • ChatGPT Plus for Codex, with cloud tasks and GitHub code reviews, and by far the lowest cost per task of the top models in that same benchmark.
  • Lovable Pro, Bolt Pro, Replit Core or Devin Desktop Pro, if you'd rather build in the browser or in an AI editor.

Many people end up with two $20 plans, like Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus: when one hits its limit, the other keeps going. See Codex vs Claude Code.

The hidden costs

  • Running out mid-month. Credits and usage windows run out; topping up or upgrading is where costs grow. On Cursor's new plans, Claude and GPT are billed at API prices on top of the plan. See Claude Code's limits and Codex's.
  • Hosting. App builders include it. With a coding agent you host the app yourself; many hosts have free tiers for small projects.
  • A domain name, usually about $10 to $20 a year. Custom domains usually need a paid plan on the app builders.
  • A database and sign-in. Built into Lovable, Bolt and Replit; with a coding agent you add a service, many of which have free tiers.
  • AI inside your app. If your app itself calls an AI model, that's billed separately by the AI company.

Ways to spend less

  1. Plan before you build. Lovable's Plan mode costs 1 credit a message, and Claude Code's plan mode agrees on an approach before any code is written. Rework is what burns credits.
  2. Use the smaller model for small jobs. Sonnet instead of Opus in Claude Code; GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Luna instead of GPT-6 Astra in Codex.
  3. Start a fresh chat for each task, so the AI doesn't re-read a long history every message.
  4. Use free models for simple work, and save your paid plan for the hard parts.
  5. Don't pay for two tools that do the same thing. One app builder or one coding agent, plus a second AI plan if you hit limits often.

Questions

Is vibe coding free? It can be, with free tiers from Lovable, Bolt, v0, Copilot, Antigravity, Codex (in the ChatGPT app) and free models. For daily building, expect $20 to $30 a month.

What's the cheapest way to vibe code? For no money: an app builder's free plan, or free models through OpenCode, OpenRouter or Ollama. For the most per dollar: GitHub Copilot Pro at $10, or one $20 AI plan with a coding agent.

Is Lovable or Claude Code cheaper? For small or occasional changes, Lovable. For building every day, a flat Claude plan usually goes further. See Lovable vs Claude Code.

Do I have to pay for hosting? Not with an app builder, which includes it. With a coding agent, small projects can usually be hosted for free.
